Leveraging Privacy Enhancing Technologies to find Balance in the Era of Rapid Technological Advancement, Part I: Regulatory Views on the Role and Effectiveness of PETs

Driven by the global advance of data protection regulations and by increased demand for access and uses of data by every sector, the role of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETs) has become increasingly important. From differential privacy, to synthetic data, homomorphic encryption and multi-party computation - the catalog of PETs is constantly expanding. However, significant uncertainties about PETs regulatory implications, technical effectiveness and utility remain a constraint to their widespread adoption. Privacy and Data Protection Authorities are often called on to evaluate PETs and increasingly are providing guidance to the public and private sector, collaborating with each other, and engaging with technical experts to maintain a level of expertise. This session will feature two panels of regulators and privacy leaders implementing PETs in order to explore the most promising technologies and discuss what it takes to successfully implement them.

Part I of our Side Event invites regulators to share their views about the role of PETs in promoting respect for privacy and data protection, as well as to present their latest initiatives in this space.

The Latin American approach to Model Contractual Clauses: a recipe for free and secure data flows

Model contractual clauses gain more and more followers around the world, for being a reliable and easy-to-implement transfer instrument that offers legal certainty, thus facilitating the provision of services and trade, while ensuring an appropriate level of privacy protection. This has notably been recognised by the recent G7 Action Plan for Promoting Data Free Flow with Trust that refers to such clauses as “increasingly common practices”. Latin America, that has emerged as one of the most interesting "laboratories" for privacy around the world, is a key driver of this trend. Speakers include representatives of Latam countries that are either adopting or considering adopting the Latam model as well as speakers from other regions, which will allow exchanging views and sharing experiences that can lead to cross-regional fertilization. Come debate with us!

Afternoon tea will be served.
Simultaneous interpretation from Spanish to English and Turkish will be provided.
